Scope in writing, first
Before any work starts you get a short engagement note: what will be done, what it costs, what is excluded, and who is doing it.
Disclaimer
As per the rules of the Bar Council of India, an advocate may not solicit work or advertise. By continuing to this website you acknowledge and confirm that:
The firm
DIA Law Associates is a firm of advocates and legal consultants practising from Sowcarpet, Chennai, for companies, promoters, family businesses and individuals.
Sowcarpet is where a large share of Chennai's importers, wholesalers and family-run firms have traded for generations, and that is the kind of client the firm mostly works for: a business with real operations, real staff and real deadlines, that needs a legal question answered this week rather than a memorandum next month.
The firm's work is mostly corporate and commercial — the agreements a business signs, the filings it owes, the licences it holds, the property it occupies, and the disputes it would rather settle. Matters are handled by an advocate you can reach directly, not passed down a chain, and where a matter needs senior counsel or a specialist such as a chartered accountant or company secretary, the firm briefs and coordinates them on your behalf.
Two things are fixed in every engagement. You are told the likely cost and timeline before work begins, in writing. And you are told plainly when a matter is not worth pursuing — a recovery that will cost more than it recovers, or a clause that is not worth fighting over.
How the firm works
Before any work starts you get a short engagement note: what will be done, what it costs, what is excluded, and who is doing it.
The person who heard your matter is the person handling it. You will not be re-explaining the file to someone new each time.
Every draft comes with what it means in practice — which clause hurts, which one is standard, and which is worth negotiating.
At closure you receive executed documents, filings and receipts as one indexed set, so the next advisor does not start from zero.
